Pushbikers Winter Camp

We say hello to 2022

Pushbikers Winter Camp

Feb 1, 2022

Was es jetzt braucht? Konzentration. Lachende Gesichter, gelöste Anspannung, Zufriedenheit, kindliche Freude.

Das Spiel ist beendet – das Gefühl bleibt.

Welcome 2022

And that is exactly how the story of the 2022 season begins with a silver bullet made of tinfoil. You can’t plan moments like this. They just happen when it fits. A thought that is difficult to accept if you want to be successful, if your performance as an athlete and as a team can actually be measured in race mode. To absolve ourselves of this a little bit, that was our attempt in the winter camp. Bicycles? – Not a thing. Only the ergometer, cross-country and touring skis, snowshoes, running shoes and time for exchange and conversations, which also got deeper. Getting the riders and staff together to get to know each other is something we have not been able to do in the past two years. But now on this weekend in frosty January.

„I enjoyed the team building games the most, where we strengthened our relationship with each other and trust in each other.”

(Pippo)

„We tried to make the most of every minute to get to know each other better. To allow ourselves this time and not lose focus for it, we also deliberately refrained from taking bicycles to the camp.”

(Rupert)

Winter Wonderland

And then the Pushbikers were very lucky: perfect winter weather with snow, dry cold and blue skies. Time not to get on the bike, but to discover the mountains in Reit im Winkel in three groups: cross-country skiing and touring, as well as with snowshoes and poles. Again, differently composed groups, different conversation partners, new experiences, grandiose scenery. And those who hike too far are punished by the timetable clock: the snowshoe group had to make its way back down by gondola without further ado, so that the rest of the group would not have to wait too long and the afternoon programme would not be at stake. There were individual and group discussions, the push-up duel between the driver and the sports director, a fictitious English TV interview and two silver balls. By the way, during dinner they discussed how to make a rapper band out of Laurin and Max and how to include cycling in it.

Speaking of dinner: eating itself usually goes pretty quickly for athletes. The buffet is set out, surrounded, taken away – and there’s almost nothing left. Until supplies arrive and the observer is overcome by the feeling of “Groundhog Day”. The good thing about it is that there is more time for conversation without having to take in supplies at the same time. And the drivers and staff had plenty of time for that. The seating position at the tables was also changed in turn, some people were seen talking long and intensively, at the next table the laughter was all the louder for it.

„In fact, two long intense conversations late at night (once about history, once about felt/lived everyday racism) excited me the most. I think it’s great that the average age has risen and the topics of conversation have become more extensive.”

(Daniel)

„I realised that I need to express myself more and talk a lot more with the young people who I know want to learn from me. This has not only given me great pleasure, but has also been another step in my development as a team leader.”

„ Our team dynamic is a whole different one again after the few days !”

(Laurin)

At the end of the Pushbikers Winter Camp, the sporting director sums up very briefly that he is very satisfied with the development of the team at this point in the season. “The self-motivation of the riders is having an effect on the motivation of the staff again, we can build on that well.” “I am already a bit exhausted,” Paul Rudys admits, “because it was after all exhausting days with many impressions. But I also left with the very good feeling that we will have a good season together. I can’t wait until the season finally starts.
And the bicycle? “I missed it a bit in the end,” says Daniel Bichlmann. In mid-February, the next training camp will continue, and then kilometres and metres in altitude can be collected again in Italian climes. Benvenuti nel mondo dei Pushbikers!
