What do you consider your greatest success – sporting, but also personal?

Never compromising, always being myself and always giving my best, both as a person and in sport.

How did you get into cycling?

As a child, I often rode my bike in the fields around our house. Then I started racing bikes and one day in the summer, when I was about 13 years old, I saw a couple of riders training as a team. I was then keen to find out where the team headquarters was, and I realised I wanted to compete. When I was 18, I became national runner-up on the road and in the time trial – and that’s how it all developed.

What do you value most about cycling?

The feeling of passing on emotions to family and fans is wonderful.

What are your favourite cycling routes?

I would say hard stretches and short climbs; and repeating that up and down all day.

Do you have a personal race ritual?

Before every race I always check that the brakes are well adjusted. As we all know, cycling is already very hard, but if something is wrong with the brakes, it becomes even harder.

If you weren’t a cyclist, what would you be?

That’s a difficult question. When I was young, I never thought of doing anything other than cycling. An astronaut maybe, to be in space.
